Weight Loss: Food Allergies & Sensitivities

What are food allergies?

A food allergy is an immune system response that is typically characterized by reactions such as hives, shortness of breath, upset stomach or anaphylaxis. The most common food allergies are to nuts, shellfish, wheat and dairy.

What is food sensitivity?

Food sensitivities occur when the body is unable to digest certain compounds, especially proteins found in foods such as milk, eggs, wheat or soy. Around 70-80% of the US population has food intolerance.Unfortunately for many, food intolerance symptoms like discomfort, bloating or lethargy are often misidentified.

Food sensitivities tend to show symptoms later than food allergies. For example, if you eat or drink something to which you have a food sensitivity, you may not notice symptoms for up to 24-72 hours. With a food allergy, a reaction may be immediate.

Allergies, sensitivity & weight gain

While the allergy or sensitivity does not directly cause someone to put on extra pounds, the reactions the body has to the food may indirectly lead to weight gain.

If someone experiences a food sensitivity, they may feel lethargic, which would lead to a decrease in motivation or activity level, leading to higher numbers on the scale. For those who suffer from food allergies, the inflammation they experience could be to blame for weight gain. inflammation may be to blame for weight gain.

Chronic inflammation is caused by several diseases and conditions, including insulin resistance, which can lead to weight gain. Insulin regulates the body’s ability to metabolize food. When the body becomes insulin resistant it isn’t able to properly metabolize foods, which can lead to increased weight gain.

What can be done?

Left untreated, food sensitivities and allergies may lead to unwanted weight gain, among other issues. Testing for these enables the elimination of reactive foods from the diet, alleviating previously undiagnosed symptoms.

Testing for food allergies and sensitivities is an important part in the weight loss journey. The Healthy Habits comprehensive home-to-lab tests check for common food intolerance items including wheat, fish, milk and meats, and allergen items including pollen, nuts, and pets. Included with the results is a full guide on how to perform an elimination of the reacting items.
